Headland, located in the far southeastern corner of Alabama, is the largest city in Henry County. It is part of the Dothan metropolitan area and has a population of about 4,500 according to the 2010 United States Census. The city, originally named Head’s Land, was founded in 1871 by James Joshua Head who built his home in the city after he patented the land and plotted the town. Headland was eventually incorporated as a city in 1884.

Headland is a very active city that provides many events for its community that individuals will find entertaining. Each January, on the last Friday of the month, the city hosts an annual outdoor fundraising barbecue. The city also hosts an annual Christmas parade in the Headland Town Square. The parade not only features decorative rides but also offers the opportunity for children to meet Santa. In October, Headland hosts a Harvest Day Festival. Beautiful arts and crafts, children’s games and rides, food, and entertainment are all featured at the event.

Headland tends to see mild temperatures throughout the months of winter. The months of December, January, and February have average daytime highs that range from the lower to mid-60s. Temperatures at night dip into the mid to high-30s, although the city has seen a record low of 0 degrees. These months also tend to be very rainy. The month of January sees the most amount of rain on average. About 6 ½ inches of rain falls in January. Despite the season’s milder temperatures, individuals will find it wise to invest in a heat pump in order to keep indoor temperatures comfortable and dry.

Due to the city’s location within the United States, summer is often very humid and warm in Headland. Temperatures average in the 90s and have seen historic highs reach into the 100s. Residents will want to have their cooling units inspected to ensure they are prepared to last throughout the warmer seasons in the area.
